Multiplication Equations for Number Lines

So far, you've learned that **multiplication **is adding the same number repeatedly.

Look at this multiplication equation:

3 x 4 =?

We figured out that there are **3 groups of 4 objects.**

So how do we multiply to get our answer?

One way to solve multiplication problems is **using a number line.**

This is a number line:

We'll be doing some jumping on it. π

We start at zero, then we **jump forward **some steps.

Let's go back to our equation.

3 x 4 =?

**3 **tells the **number of jumps **we have **to make.**

**4 **tells us **how big each jump should be.**

Are you ready?

Let's go!

We make 3 jumps of 4 steps each.

Now, we've landed on a number.

π When using the number line to multiply, the last number you land on is the answer.Β

π **Important**: Never count the number you start on. You always start counting at the next number.

So, what's the answer?

That's right! It's 12.

Great job! π

Let's try another equation.

5 x 2 =?

How many jumps do we have to make?

Yes! 5 jumps.

How big should each jump be?

That's right! 2 steps.

Let's go!

Where did we land?

At 10!

That's our answer.

Great work! π

Now, why don't you jump on to practice? π
